Goals from Lautaro Martinez and Sergio Aguero ensured Argentina progress to the last eight with an unconvincing win over Qatar.
After picking up a point in the first two matches of the competition, anything other than a win would have seen Argentina suffer a humiliating group-stage exit.
Inter Milan forward Martinez scored within the first five minutes to give Argentina the perfect start, despite the goal, it wasn’t plain sailing for a side that failed to convince once again.
Argentina, who finished second behind Colombia in Group C will now face Venezuela in the quarterfinals on June 28 at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.
Sergio Aguero who was restored to the starting eleven, having dropped to the bench in the previous match missed an excellent chance to double their lead early on in the match.
The Manchester City forward and Barcelona star Lionel Messi, both missed excellent chances later on in the match, but Aguero was on hand to provide the jugular in the 82nd minute.
Lionel Scaloni’s side will have to improve on this showing if they are to go all the way in the competition.
